Research Focus: Dr. Ela provides individual and group psychotherapy in the outpatient programs at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital.

Additional clinical experience includes sport and performance. Dr. Ela has worked with Division I college and professional athletes from various leagues, including Major League Soccer, Major League Baseball, former Olympians, and the National Hockey League. He currently provides mental health support to the Washington Capitals.

BIO

Dr. Kurt Ela is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center. He works with adults and adolescents in individual psychotherapy. He is on the Wellness team in the Department of Psychiatry and is a wellness coach for first-year psychiatry residents. Other areas of focus include grief and loss, depression, and group therapy, which he teaches at Georgetown. A trained psychoanalyst, Dr. Ela co-teaches the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy seminar within the Child and Adolescent Fellowship program. He and his co-teachers were awarded the William Licamele, MD Distinguished Seminar Teacher Award for the course. In addition to teaching, Dr. Ela also contributes to the development of future clinicians through psychotherapy supervision in both the Adult General Residency Program and the Child and Adolescent Psychology Externship. For the former, he received the Psychotherapy Supervisor of the Year Award, Dr. Ela received his BA in English Literature and Psychology from Amherst College and his Doctorate from The George Washington University. He completed his Internship at Pennsylvania Hospital within the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
