Denisha Carter

Dr. Denisha Carter holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Carolina University, a Master of Science degree in Psychology from Virginia State University and a Doctoral degree (PsyD) in Clinical Psychology from The American School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Carter completed her Pre-Doctoral Internship at The Children’s Institute in Los Angeles, CA and Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Emory School of Medicine/Grady Health Systems in Atlanta, GA. Her thesis research focused on trauma and intimate relationships. Dr. Carter’s dissertation research entitled The Impact of Child Sexual Abuse on Sibling Relationships highlighted relational changes amongst abused and non-abused siblings. While in graduate school, Dr. Carter served as the Director of Conference Affairs and Director of Administration for the National Black Graduate Student Association, a national organization focused on the support and development of graduate students of color, and a founding member of a university-based chapter. Dr. Carter’s clinical experience includes but is not limited to: providing therapeutic support to traumatized children and adolescents, building capacity in support systems (specifically parents and families), facilitating client centered, consultee centered and administrative consultation in school based environments and juvenile justice forums, conducting professional development workshops for mental health providers, medical providers and school-based staff, and supervising master’s and doctoral level clinical trainees.

Dr.Carter is the Co-Director of Psychology Clinical Training at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in the Department of Psychiatry-Child and Adolescent Division. She is also a member of the clinical team at Medstar’s Center for Wellbeing in School Environments (WISE Center) , Adjunct Faculty at The Chicago School for Professional Psychology (Master’s in Forensic Psychology program), and a Certified Juvenile Sexual Offending Counselor. In addition, she is a member of the Board of Directors of Monument Academy, a public charter school in Washington DC. In her free time, she enjoys visiting with family and friends, playing spirited games of Monopoly and anytime on or near a beach!
