BIO
Until 2015, I was tenured Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry, and Founding Associate Dean for Faculty Development for GUMC. I am currently Professor Emeritus at GUMC, where I continue to teach/mentor and do research. I was Director of the Georgetown Center for Trauma and the Community, whose purpose was to develop innovative and sustainable interventions for trauma-related mental health needs of low-income populations seen in primary care safety net settings in the Washington, DC region. I am past Editor of the Journal of Traumatic Stress, and past President of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
Research Interests
Psychological trauma; interpersonal violence; low income and minority women; patient-provider relationships; development and delivery of interventions for trauma-related mental health problems; posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression; primary care treatment of mental health problems.
Research Summary
My research at Georgetown has addressed psychological and physical health consequences of trauma. I have developed instruments to assess trauma history, and participated in guideline development for intervention with trauma-exposed populations. My recent research focus has been mental health needs of poor women with trauma histories attend primary healthcare settings serving low-income patients. Federally funded studies include those targeting depression or PTSD in primary care, how trauma and PTSD are managed by primary care providers, and the development and testing of a CME curriculum to train primary care providers to work with trauma patients. A recent study addressed trauma and its impacts on women in jail.
