BIO
Dr. Barkil-Oteo provides holistic treatment anchored in the scientific understanding of the brain, the mind, and the body. He has particular expertise in working with people affected by psychological trauma and integrates different explanatory models to accommodate people from various backgrounds; he regularly consults with international organizations (IMF, World Bank, and UNICEF) regarding their staff well-being and general mental health policies. Dr. Barkil-Oteo’s research contributions testify to his academic expertise and dedication to advancing mental health. His research area of focus is on the mental health of refugees, medical education, and using technology to deliver mental health. He has published over 27 journal articles, authored several chapters, and edited one book on telemental health. Dr. Barkil-Oteo’s expertise extends beyond academia. He has a wealth of experience working with NGOs in conflict settings, delivering crucial mental health services. His roles have included coordinating the mental health response for the refugee crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean region with Doctors Without Borders (MSF), conducting mental health-focused evaluation and training missions with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and serving as staff well-being consultant for United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
