BIO

Dr. Madhumathi (Madhu) Rao is an Adult Psychiatrist with a special interest in women’s mental health and focuses on optimizing medications and incorporating therapy and mindfulness during the hormonal changes of pregnancy and menopause. She specializes in Mood and Anxiety disorders and Adult ADHD. She teaches psychiatry residents, family medicine residents and medical students at Georgetown University’s School of Medicine. Additionally, in her role as the lead psychiatrist in the collaborative care clinics at Montgomery Cares, Dr. Rao leads a multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive care for a culturally diverse, uninsured population with mood and anxiety disorders, PTSD and complex medical co-morbidities.

As an active member of the National Task Force for Women’s Reproductive Mental Health, Dr. Rao contributed to the didactic curriculum in reproductive psychiatry and to the first textbook published by the American Psychiatric Association on Women’s Reproductive Mental Health. 

Education: 

Dr. Rao received her M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine in New York and completed her Psychiatry residency at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Rao also holds a MS in Computer Science and Bio-medical Informatics from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Sri Venkateswara University in India.
