Research Focus: My research area of interest includes issues of concern during the perinatal period and mental health support for families who have a baby in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Other Areas of Interest: In addition to supervising medical and postdoctoral professionals, Dr. Saroop enjoys teaching and mentoring students across disciplines including students in the Creative Arts Therapies. This includes students in training for Music Therapy, Dance Movement Therapy and Art Therapy.

Two Hearts, Mental Health and Wellness at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s NICU

BIO

Shilpa Saroop, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist with joint appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics. She specializes in perinatal mental health and treats mood and anxiety disorders during the pregnancy and postpartum period. In the Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Saroop conducts individual, couples, and family therapy in the Women’s Mental Health Program. She provides support for women as they transition to motherhood. Dr. Saroop also participates in the training of psychiatry residents at MGUH. In the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Saroop directs the Two Hearts Mental Health and Wellness Program and provides support to families and staff in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). There, she provides on-site consultation to treatment providers and brief interventions, assessment and referrals for individuals and families who have a child receiving care in the NICU. She provides wellness support to NICU staff as well.

Dr. Saroop received her B.A. from the University of Virginia and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University with a specialization in Clinical Child Psychology. She has worked in various settings, including outpatient community mental health clinics, school settings, university counseling center, psychiatric hospitals and schools of medicine. She has taught medical students, graduate students in psychology and social work, and residents and fellows in psychiatry and pediatrics. Prior to joining MGUH, Dr. Saroop served as an assistant professor and directed clinical services and training of medical and doctoral students in the Department of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA.
